what actually gets in the way

six things nobody
tells you

the assignment brief assumes context you were not given

words like critique, reflect and argue carry specific expectations in us coursework, and nobody spells them out because to everyone else they are obvious.

citation rules are stricter than in many systems

what counts as common knowledge, when a paraphrase still needs a source, and how heavily you may lean on a text all differ by country. the penalties here are severe.

participation is often graded

speaking in class is not optional enthusiasm, it is a percentage. knowing that early changes how you prepare for a seminar.

office hours are an expectation, not an imposition

in many systems approaching faculty informally would be inappropriate. here, not doing it reads as disengagement.

academic english is a register, not a vocabulary

fluent speakers still lose marks on hedging, signposting and the conventions of an argument. that is learnable and quick to fix with a reader.

time zones make the standard advice useless

when the help everyone recommends is only open while you are asleep, asynchronous help is not a compromise, it is the only kind that works.

what to post

a photo of the problem, or a sentence about what you did not follow. verified tutors send offers with a price, a rating and a completion rate, and you pick who helps you.

for the writing conventions specifically see essay writing.
