where it usually goes wrong
the six that cost
the most marks
debits and credits are not good and bad
they are left and right. every account has a normal side, and the whole system is bookkeeping, not judgement. people who translate them as positive and negative stay confused for a semester.
the equation always holds
assets equal liabilities plus equity, after every single entry. if it does not balance, the error is findable, and that is the most useful debugging tool in the course.
accrual is about timing
revenue when earned, expense when incurred, regardless of when cash moves. almost every tricky question is testing that one idea.
adjusting entries are where it goes wrong
accruals, deferrals, depreciation. they arrive at the end of the period and they are the most common place to lose an exam.
follow the flow all the way through
journal, ledger, trial balance, statements. seeing one transaction travel the whole path once teaches more than reading the chapter twice.
it is a practice subject
you cannot read accounting into your head. the people who do well are the ones who worked problem sets until the entries became automatic.
what to post
a photo of the problem, or a sentence about where you got stuck. set the deadline and attach anything that matters.
