what a thesis
statement is

most of them are a topic wearing a disguise. there is one test, and it takes five seconds.

"this essay will discuss the causes of the french revolution" is not a thesis. neither is "social media has both positive and negative effects". both announce a subject. a thesis makes a claim about the subject that somebody could argue with.

the test

could a reasonable, informed person disagree with this sentence? if no, it is a topic. if yes, it is a thesis, and you now have four paragraphs of work to do defending it — which is the point.

"social media has both positive and negative effects" fails: nobody disagrees. "the harms of social media for teenagers come from its design rather than its content" passes: plenty of people would argue the opposite, and now you have to show it.

specific beats grand

a narrow claim you can actually support in the word count beats a sweeping one you can only gesture at. "the revolution was caused by economic crisis" is too big for a five-page essay. "the 1788 harvest failure mattered more than ideology in turning the parisian poor against the crown" is arguable, specific, and finishable.

it goes where the
reader expects it

end of the first paragraph, in most academic writing. burying it in the conclusion is a common instinct — you worked out what you thought while writing — and the fix is to move it to the front in the second draft rather than to leave the reader guessing.

it should change
while you write

the thesis you start with is a hypothesis. if the evidence pushes back, the honest move is to change the claim, not to bend the evidence. an essay whose argument shifted and then got rewritten to match reads far better than one defending a position the writer stopped believing on page two.

then check the paragraphs

every paragraph should be defensible as "this is here because it supports the claim". a paragraph that is interesting but does not serve the thesis is the most common cut in a second draft. more on structure and evidence on essay writing, and for applications specifically, college essays is a different job with different rules.
